The holidays are usually a time of happiness and joy, but stress can quickly creep in wreaking havoc on your skin. Combine that with the dry, cold air and the unlimited sweets that seem to always be in a clear line of sight, it’s as if your skin is doomed from November to February.
If you’re like so many who experience the nasty breakouts every yuletide season, you’re not alone. We’re going to share with you five holiday skin care tips that will help keep the breakouts at bay and keep your skin radiant and beautiful throughout the holiday season.
Let’s dive right in, shall we?!
Holiday Skin Tip #1- Manage your stress
Okay, this one seems obvious but it’s very necessary to keep that holiday glow. Stress can exacerbate many skin conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea. When your body experiences stress, it lowers your immune system, thus making skin conditions worse by lowering your body’s ability to fight inflammation. Be sure to take plenty of time to relax and unwind. Consider a facial or yoga to help calibrate your mood.
Holiday Skin Tip #2- Don’t overindulge on sweets
Sweet treats seem to be everywhere this time of year making the temptation that much more irresistible. We get it, who doesn’t love Christmas sugar cookies!? Okay, we aren’t saying you can’t eat them, just eat them in moderation. Let’s break it down. Skin is composed of collagen and elastin, which makes our skin supple and soft. Sugar causes cross-linking of collagen, resulting in stiffening and loss of elasticity of our skin. The more sugar we have, the more our skin starts to suffer. Consider sweet alternatives when possible to help keep your sugar intake at a minimum.
Holiday Skin Tip #3 - Get your beauty sleep
For some, the holidays are a time to catch up on some much needed rest and relaxation, but for others, it’s the most sleepless time of the year. The shopping, the baking, the entertaining, it leaves very little time for sleep. Lack of sleep not only makes us feel bad, but it makes our skin look tired and dull as well. Dark circles and bags under the eyes can show up in those holiday pictures so be sure you’re getting at least 7 - 8 hours of sleep each night.
Holiday Skin Tip #4 - Consistency is key
Traveling during the holidays can throw off your entire routine, and even though you may not be traveling as much this year, sticking with a skincare routine is very important. Be sure you are cleansing, moisturizing and adding the SPF daily. Yes, we said SPF! You should not be skipping this step just because it's cold and gray outside. The UVA and UVB rays can still penetrate your skin in the cooler, gray months.
Holiday Skin Tip # 5 - Adjust your skincare routine for the season
With the holidays comes the change of season and that can typically mean a change to your skin as well. Depending on your skin type and how it reacts to season change, consider adding a thicker moisturizer to your skincare regimen. In addition, look at your cleanser. This is another item that can be changed up as well during the dry, cold months to combat the winter irritation.
